Parent Support Services

At Silber Psychological Services, we provide parent support interventions, which include therapeutic approaches that help parents and caregivers learn strategies to navigate children’s behavioral challenges and provide emotional support. It is often helpful to work with a parent support therapist to provide a new perspective and collaboratively determine what problems to address and how to do so in a way that balances both positive, warm interactions with structure and clear expectations. We provide various parent support interventions, including behavioral parent training, parent-child interaction therapy, and circle of security parenting, which are described below:

Behavioral Parent Training

Behavioral parent training (BPT) is a program that helps parents learn ways to manage and respond to their children’s behaviors in order to create behavioral change in their children.

This program is often implemented with parents of children with ADHD, aggression, or related challenges and focuses on helping parents create house rules and routines, use clear instructions, praise positive behaviors, and ignore inappropriate behaviors.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy

Parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT), a type of behavioral parent training, is an evidence-based treatment for young children between the ages of 2-7 with disruptive behaviors. Through this treatment, caregivers learn therapeutic skills that improve children’s attention and listening, reduce children’s tantrums, and strengthen the caregiver-child relationship. This is done through live coaching of parents using the PCIT skills with their child. Weekly sessions are individualized to each parent and family’s needs. More information on PCIT can be found at https://www.pcit.org/what-is-pcit.html.

Given the abundance of research on PCIT, it has been adapted for children with selective mutism (PCIT-SM). PCIT-SM is an evidence-based treatment that helps children with selective mutism increase their brave talking and supplies parents with skills to support their child’s verbalizations. Similarly to standard PCIT, this approach follows a live coaching model, such that parents are provided with live feedback while utilizing skills with their child. More information on PCIT-SM can be found at https://www.kurtzpsychology.com/selective-mutism/what-is-selective-mutism-2/.

Circle of Security Parenting

The Circle of Security Parenting (COSP) program is a parenting intervention that is based upon attachment theory and aims to support the establishment of secure attachment relationships between parents and their children. The COSP program helps parents connect and be present with their children during both positive and negative moments by learning to recognize their children’s needs and understand their behaviors. The COSP program is often provided via a group-based intervention that incorporates videos and guided reflection and discussion.

Principles of COSP are also incorporated into individual therapy sessions to best support each parent-child relationship’s unique needs. The COSP program was originally developed with parents of infants and young children in mind, but can be useful for parents of children of any age, including teenagers.

More information on the COSP program can be found at https://www.circleofsecurityinternational.com/.
