Psychological Testing
Psychological Testing is sometimes requested by parents, schools, or physicians to get a better understanding of the person. Frequently requested are measures of:
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Autism Spectrum Disorders (Asperger’s Syndrome)
- Learning Disabilities (LD)
- Kindergarten Readiness
- Academically Gifted
- Emotional Functioning
- Intelligence or "IQ"
The specific standardized tests which are selected and administered are tailored to the individual needs of your child. Psychological testing takes several hours of time usually broken down into 2 hour increments. The cost of the assessment is based on the number of contact hours with the child plus two additional hours of charges for the time psychologists will spend scoring, analyzing, and writing up the report. After the report is finished, the results are ready for interpretation to the parents including findings, implications for the future, and recommendations.
Individual Therapy
Individual therapy may be recommended to address specific problems in more depth. These are issues which require personal focus. Oftentimes, individuals who seek therapy are in some distress. We use an eclectic approach to treatment with particular emphasis placed on Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal Therapy although other approaches are frequently integrated. Typically, sessions occur on a weekly or every-other week basis for 45 minute increments. Two way communication, openness and trust are important components of an individual therapy relationship.
Social Skills Training
Social Skill Training is designed for children or adolescents who have a variety of social, communication, and relationship problems. Some children are too shy, others react impulsively or create conflicts, but many have few friends or seem unaware of interpersonal cues. We offer Social Skills groups for grades K-12 with most children attending a group with children of similar age and gender. Additionally, we have several groups for children with Asperger’s Syndrome as these children have many interpersonal difficulties due to tendencies to "march to their own drummer". Treatment offers a ready-made social situation where the child is accepted for who he or she is while learning new ways of relating to others.
Group Therapy
For children struggling with peer interactions, a Social Skills Training Group may be more appropriate as the treatment of choice. For older middle or high school students, relationship issues and related problems may best be addressed in a group format. Groups offer a ready-made situation to learn new ways of looking at problems, relating to others, engaging in role-modeling, and feeling supported in a safe environment. Groups can help weaken the pull of negative peer influence. We often use Insight Oriented Therapy and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) to foster new ways of interacting with increased confidence and skill. Length of treatment varies considerably depending upon the severity of the problems, motivation, and ability to risk making changes.
Family Therapy
At Silber Psychological Services, our staff uses family therapy to resolve conflicts that develop in families through increasing understanding and developing better strategies without placing the blame on anyone in particular. Busy and fatigued parents often have differing views on how to manage a given situation. For others, certain negative or hard to manage traits in a member of the family can put untold stress on the entire household. Our goal is to reduce stress and increase parents’ ability to find positive and effective ways of encouraging satisfying relationships between all family members.
